ISO COMPACTION CONTAINERSISO (International Standards Organisation) provides a series of standard dimensions and
securing points for containers so that they can be loaded and off loaded from road, rail
and sea transport anywhere in the world. The standard also specifies the tests to be
carried out concerning the structural strength of the container and its ability to be
stacked. Large cities and conurbations do not have the space to match the volume and speed of
production of waste in their areas. The solution adopted by a number of local authorities
is to compact the waste at a number of strategically located transfer stations and
transport by road the full containers to a rail head or docks for transfer to landfill.
